Is booking a PG in Bangalore in advance safe?

Yes — if no money moves before a person has stood inside the room. How advance bookings go wrong in Bengaluru, and the sequence that avoids it.

Updated 4 SEP 2026

The fear is reasonable and you should not talk yourself out of it. You are being asked to send money to a stranger, for a room you have never seen, in a city you have never lived in, on the strength of four photographs and a phone number. People do lose money doing exactly that.

But the answer is not “never book in advance” — that just means arriving with your luggage and no address, which is its own kind of expensive. The answer is to understand where the risk actually sits, which is narrower than it feels.

The risk is not the room. It is the sequence.

Almost every bad outcome we hear about comes from money moving before anyone looked. Everything else is recoverable. If you visit a place and dislike it, you walk away. If you send eighteen thousand rupees and then discover the address does not exist, you have no move left.

So there is really only one rule, and it is worth more than every other piece of advice on this page:

No money moves until a person you can identify has stood inside that specific room.

That person can be you. It can be a friend or a colleague already in Bengaluru. It can be us. It cannot be the photographs.

The three ways this actually goes wrong

1. The room that is not theirs to let

Someone lifts photographs from a real listing, posts them as their own, and collects a token from four or five people for the same room. There is a property, and it is occupied, and the person collecting has nothing to do with it. This is the most common one, and it is why an unscheduled live video call is such a good test — a person who does not have keys cannot produce one.

2. The room that is real but not the one you are getting

The photographs are of the good room on the first floor. You arrive and are put in the windowless one at the back, at the same rent, and told the other is taken. Nothing illegal has happened and you have already paid a deposit, which is precisely why it works. The defence is to have your room identified specifically — which floor, which door — before anything is paid.

3. The deposit that never comes back

This one is slower and much more common than outright fraud. You pay two months, you leave after four, and the deposit is returned minus deductions nobody mentioned when you moved in. Painting. Deep cleaning. A notice period you were never told about. The money is not stolen; it is quietly eroded by terms that were never written down. See deposits, advances and documents for what to get in writing.

A sequence that is genuinely safe

  1. Shortlist without paying anything. Nobody should need money to answer questions.
  2. Get a live video walkthrough of the specific room, from inside, unscheduled. If they offer a recorded video instead, that is not the same thing — a recording can be from anywhere, any year.
  3. Confirm the room is identified. Floor, room, which bed if it is shared.
  4. Get the terms in a message from the owner: rent, deposit, notice period, what electricity costs, what food is included, the date you move in.
  5. Verify the person. A call from the property. A photograph taken that day. Their name matching the account you are being asked to pay.
  6. Pay the deposit on arrival where you can. If a small token really is needed to hold the room, keep it small, pay it to the owner directly, and get an acknowledgement in writing.
  7. Never pay a stranger who contacted you first on a classifieds site or a community group with an offer that is noticeably below the going rate.

Things that should stop you outright

  • They will not do a live video call, or keep rescheduling one.
  • The rent is far below everything else in the same area with no explanation.
  • They want the full deposit before you have arrived, urgently, today.
  • They will not give a building name or a landmark, only “near the tech park”.
  • The bank account or UPI name does not match the person you have been talking to.
  • They ask you to pay to an agent, and then a second amount to a different person.
  • They apply time pressure: two other people are seeing it this evening, send it now.

The last one deserves a note. Genuine scarcity exists — good rooms near Ecospace and Manyata really do go quickly. But a real owner will tell you it is going and let you decide. Manufactured urgency is aimed at stopping you from checking, which is the only thing protecting you.

What we do, and what we deliberately do not

We go and stand inside the property. On a live call, you see the room, the bathroom, the kitchen, the street, and you ask the questions. That is the whole product, and it exists because the managed chains only ever tour their own buildings — nobody was doing it for the independent place where the rent is actually affordable.

What we do not do is touch your money. We never take or hold a deposit, an advance, a token or rent. It goes from you to the owner directly, and the reason is not modesty about payments — it is that a relocator defrauded through this site would end the business, and the cleanest way to never be that is to never be in the path of the money at all. Anyone asking you to send funds to RentRadius is not us.

Every listing here also carries the date it was checked and how, and drops off the site automatically once that check is a month old. You can read exactly what each method means on how we verify. That does not make a property good. It only means the room was there, at that rent, on that date — which turns out to be most of what you are missing from two thousand kilometres away.

What this costs you

A fair question to ask of anyone offering to help you find a room, because the answer explains whose side they are on.

  • Browsing and asking questions: nothing, and no account is needed.
  • A viewing, in person or on video: ₹500.
  • Moving in: a one-time fee, which we tell you in writing before any visit is arranged, never afterwards. It is set out on how it works.
  • Deposit and rent: paid by you to the owner directly. We never touch it.

Owners are not charged for listing, which is worth knowing for the opposite reason: nobody here is paid to push you towards a particular building.

If it has already happened to you

Stop paying immediately, including any “refund processing” amount, which is a second version of the same fraud. Keep every message, the number, the payment reference and the account name. Report it to your bank at once — speed matters more than anything else — and file a complaint on the national cybercrime portal, cybercrime.gov.in, or at the nearest police station. And tell whichever platform carried the listing, so the next person does not walk into it.

Common questions

Is it safe to pay a token amount to block a PG in Bangalore?

Only after someone you can identify has physically seen the room, and only to the owner of the building rather than to an intermediary. A token paid on the strength of photographs alone is the single most common way relocators lose money here.

How do I know the person I am talking to actually owns the PG?

Ask for a video call from inside the property, on the spot, unscheduled. Ask them to walk to the gate and show the building from outside. Someone who has the keys can do this in two minutes; someone who has only downloaded the photographs cannot do it at all.

What is a normal advance to pay for a PG in Bangalore?

For a PG, a deposit of one to two months is common, and it is usually paid on the day you move in, not weeks earlier. Be careful with anyone asking for several months up front from a person who has not arrived in the city yet.

Does RentRadius hold my deposit?

No. We never take, hold or route rent or deposits in any form. Money goes directly from you to the owner. If anyone asks you to transfer money to RentRadius, it is not us — stop and tell us.

Every listing here is dated Checked in person, on video or with the owner — and off the site after 30 days. See how we verify.
